OUR THEMES

Five areas of ageing research.

Physical Activity and Healthy Ageing

Regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to support health, mobility and independence as people age. MARC researchers investigate how exercise, movement and active lifestyles contribute to physical function, falls prevention, cognitive health and overall wellbeing in later life. This work helps identify practical approaches that support older adults to remain active, socially connected and engaged in their communities while reducing the risk of age-related decline.

Dementia and Cognitive Health

Maintaining cognitive health is an important aspect of ageing well. MARC’s dementia and cognitive health research explores factors that influence memory, thinking and brain health, while examining approaches that support people living with dementia and their families. Researchers investigate prevention, risk reduction, quality of life, care experiences and community support, contributing to evidence that informs dementia care, policy and practice.

Falls Prevention, Mobility and Balance

Falls are a leading cause of injury and loss of independence among older adults. Research in this area focuses on understanding the physical, environmental and behavioural factors that contribute to falls risk, as well as identifying effective interventions that improve balance, mobility and confidence. Findings from this work help inform evidence-based falls prevention programs and strategies that support safe and active ageing.

Mental Health and Social Wellbeing

Mental health, social connection and emotional wellbeing play a significant role in quality of life throughout later life. MARC researchers examine issues such as loneliness, resilience, community participation, social support and psychological wellbeing, recognising that healthy ageing extends beyond physical health. This research contributes to a broader understanding of the social and emotional factors that influence ageing and helps inform programs that support inclusion and wellbeing.

Health Services, Care and Ageing Policy

As Australia’s population ages, health and aged care systems face increasing complexity and demand. MARC’s research examines how services can be designed, delivered and improved to better support older people, their families and carers. Areas of focus include models of care, service quality, health economics, workforce capability, equity of access and policy development. This work helps ensure that health and aged care services are informed by evidence and responsive to the needs of an ageing population.
