Ageism is a worldwide phenomenon that has received increasing attention in the past five years. Evidence is mounting on the detrimental effects of ageism on the health and wellbeing of older adults and its negative effects on societally engagement and intergenerational solidarity. Yet very little attention has been paid to the actual experiences of older adults. This seminar discussed the ideologies present in the way we approach and frame ageing and old age, by hand of everyday practices and interactions of older adults, their close ones and (health) care professionals. On the basis of these findings, Jolanda will put forward ways to reduce ageism and foster inclusive societies.
